Müller-Thurgau - (MEW-lehr Toor-gow)
Relatively modern grape, perhaps a Riesling-Sylvaner cross, widely planted in Germany although it tends to make a simpler, lighter wine than Riesling. Also a mainstay of England's small vineyard industry.

MÜLLER-THURGAU: Early ripening cross once thought to have been developed from Sylvaner and Riesling but some authorities now contend, based on DNA analysis, that it is a Chasselas, not Sylvaner, cross with Riesling.

Also a white grape variety, the product of a cross between a Silvaner-Riesling hybrid and Müller-Thurgau. backwardWines described as backward are undeveloped and not ready to drink.

White grapes mainly cultivated in Germany are Müller-Thurgau, Riesling and Silvaner.

Germany's great vinous asset accounts for only one-fifth of the vineyard area, with Müller-Thurgau a close second.

This is largely due to Germany's main export consists of huge volumes of sugar-water Leibfraumilch, made from the high cropping but dull Müller-Thurgau grape variety -- real Alan Partridge stuff.

Origin: (Roter Traminer x Müller-Thurgau). It was created in the 1950s. Its portion in the entire vineyard area in the Czech Republic amounts to 0,7 %.
Wine: Harmonious and rich wine, its aromas evokes those of Roter Traminer.

About 90 percent of German wines are white. Riesling, Sylvaner, Müller-Thurgau, and Gewürztraminer grapes create the soft, fragrant, low-alcohol wines for which the country is famous.

Hybrid: The genetic crossing of two or more grape types; common hybrids include Müller-Thurgau and Bacchus.
Ice Wine: From the German eiswein, this is a wine made from frozen grapes; Germany, Austria and Canada are leading ice wine producers.

Bacchus
The Roman god of wine. The Bacchus white grape variety comes from a crossing between a Silvaner-Riesling and Müller-Thurgau.

Bacchus
The Greek god of wine. Also the name of a grape variety grown in Germany that is a crossing of silvaner, riesling and müller-thurgau.
