Muscadelle is a white wine grape. It has a simple aroma of grape juice and raisins like grapes of the Muscat family of grapes, but it is unrelated.

MUSCADELLE: (a.k.a Muscadelle de Bordelais). Semi-classic grape grown in the Gaillac region of France, about 100 miles southeast of Bordeaux, and used in local white sweet wine blends. Incorrectly called Sauvignon Vert in California.

Sauternes and Barsac are French wines made from Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle grapes. These wines are of a rich golden color and have a surprisingly rich honeyed sweetness.

The official recipe of Sauternes also includes Muscadelle grape, however it is not always used by producers in their wines.

Made from the Semillon grape, with varying amounts of Sauvignon Blanc, and occasionally Muscadelle, the wine is the product of the botrytis mold, which concentrates the sugars in the already over ripe grapes.

As for the white varieties, whether sweet or dry these are dominated by Sauvignon Blanc and then Semillon, with a little Muscadelle. Look closely and you may also find small areas planted to Ugni Blanc and Colombard.

These include the Muscat Blanc, Muscadel, Moscato di Canelli. These clones are mostly used for making medium-sweet and dessert style table or fortified wines.

White Bergerac wines are made from Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle grapes, while red Bergerac wines are made from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec grapes.

White Bordeaux blends will comprise Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and sometimes a dash of Muscadelle.
What is an 'aromatic' variety?

An aroma derived from grapes. Wines from sweeter grapes such as muscadel are referred to as perfumed and not floral.

Tokay: A botrytised dessert wines from north east Hungary. Australian wines named Tokay are fortified wines made from the Muscadelle variety.

It does have distant relatives in the Sylvaner (or Franken) Riesling and the crosses, Emerald Riesling (with Muscadelle du Bordelais) and Müller-Thurgau (with Sylvaner).

Meritage has special rules: Red Meritage must contain at least three of the five permitted varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot). White Meritage may contain Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and, maybe, Muscadelle ...

Being a late-ripening grape, it is often omitted from the blend unless seeing ideal vintage conditions.
Muscadelle: Only used in small proportions in sweet wines and seldom used by the top estates.
