Big, blowsey smelling wines from this abundant variety make up for in enthusiasm what they lack in subtlety. Usually sweet and fiercely intense.

 


MUSCAT OF ALEXANDRIA:
(aka Muscat Gordo Blanco or Lexia in Australia and Hanepoot in South Africa). Ancient grape species suitable for similar Mediterranean growing climates as the Muscat Blanc above.

MUSCAT OF ALEXANDRIA: Has synonym names Chasselas Musque in France, Muscat Gordo Blanco or Lexia in Australia and Hanepoot in South Africa.

This area is located in the southern side of France and it is renowned for the production of Vins Doux Naturels, naturally sweet wines produced with Muscat of Alexandria and Muscat à Petits Grains grapes.

An area located south of Lisbon (Portugal) that produces fortified wines from Muscat of Alexandria. The wines are aged in large vats and small barresl for 5 or 6 years, resulting in a deep golden wine capable of aging for many years.

Muscat: This is a very grapey-tasting grape that doesn't ripen easily. There are various varieties of Muscat - Muscat Blanc, Moscato (Italy), Muscat of Alexandria, and Muscadel.

Hot climate producers of sparkling wines often use the various Muscat grape clones to create wines in the style of Italian Spumante. Lesser regarded clones of the cépage include Muscat of Alexandria and others.
