Muted
Like a radio with the volume turned down; the elements are there, but there isn't much of them. Not usually a favorable term.

Chenin Blanc (muted; orange, pine, bread)
With a light fruity character, this is the main component of Vouvray, and is grown in California, South Africa (it's called Steen there) and the Loire Valley in France.

Cork tainted wine can range from an absence of fruit that leaves the wine muted, to an undrinkable off flavor that reeks of moldy cardboard. A chemical called 2,4,6-Trichloroanisole, "TCA" for short, is the cause of cork taint.

On the palate you get muted blackberry, black raspberry, black pepper, earth. Acidity and tannins are both appropriately medium intensity, providing good backbone. Can a wine be clean and dirty? Yes it can, as this wine proves.

The oaked Chardonnay will also have similar fruit character, but the fruit perception will be muted by the influence of oak. The fruit will be wrapped in spice, smoke, toasty oak tones and rich buttery textures.

BOTTLE SICKNESS: A temporary condition characterized by muted or disjointed fruit flavors. It often occurs immediately after bottling or when wines (usually fragile wines) are shaken in travel. Also called bottle shock.
