Negociant
French term for for "trader". But outside Bordeaux i.e. Champagne or Burgundy, the negociant's activities goes far beyond the wine trading.

 


Negociant (neh-go-see-ahn)
The French word for a trader or merchant. In wine terms it is the merchant who buys the wine in cask, and then bottles, labels and sells it.

Negociant (negociant-eleveur): A French wine merchant who buys grapes and vinifies them, or buys wines and combines them, bottles the result under his own label and ships them. Particularly found in Burgundy.

The roughly 115 negociants who produce the majority of the wine only control around 8% of the acreage. Individual growers have around 67% of the acreage, but produce only around 25% of the wine.

Originally produced from the estate vineyards, this would become a negociant wine, produced from blended grapes from other vineyards in the Bordeaux region. Good ideas last, Mouton Cadet is the world's leading selling brand today.
