Nerello Mascalese
History
Nerello Mascalese is a red grape variety from the Sicily region of southern Italy that makes dark and spicy wines including the DOC Etna Rosso, Etna as in Mount Etna.
is traditionally produced with white berried grapes - Grillo, Inzolia, Catarratto and Damaschino - and only in recent times has been introduced the one from red grapes - the Rubino - produced with Pignatello, Nero d'Avola and Nerello Mascalese.
Rather, we have a red wine blend created through a marriage of equal parts of four grapes indigenous to Sicily: Frappato Nero, Nerello Cappuccio, Nerello Mascalese, and Nero D'Avola.
Other major red varieties are Ciliegolo, Gaplioppo, Lagrein, Lambrusco, Monica, Nerello Mascalese, Pignolo, Primitivo, Refosco, Schiava, Schiopettino, Teroldego, and Uva di Troia.
