Peppery: Describes the taste of pepper in a wine; sharper than 'Spicy.'

peppery: Either the aroma of black pepper as found in cool climate Shiraz wines or the hot tingling sensation experienced in wines with very high levels of alcohol.

PEPPERY
Term almost solely applied to "spicy" wines, such as Gewurztraminer among the whites, or the red Rhone Syrah and Australian Shiraz wines.

Regional climate affects the character style of Shiraz, from cooler regions producing subdued and peppery wines to hotter spots creating muscular and ripe reds.

Dark ruby in color, with warm, plummy aromas, a hint of raisins and a dash of spice; floral and peppery notes on the nose carry over to the palate with a burst of fragrant pepper and bright red fruit.

Common flavors often found in wine descriptions are peppery, spicy, oak, chocolate, cloves, cherry, blackcurrant (cassis), mushroom (snobs prefer truffle), vanilla, smoky, coffee, tobacco, green bell pepper, lemon, apple,.

On its own, the flavor of Petite Sirah can be vaguely black peppery, but can mostly be described as "vinous" and, although agreeable, pleasant, and sometimes delicious, not highly distinctive.

Syrah is a red grape variety known for its spicy, peppery black fruit aromas, as well as a tell-tale smokiness; even scents of leather or tar.

Further west in Darling, Pinotage is promising, both as rosé and red, and Shiraz from Swartland is likely to stand out for its spicy, peppery character.

Sometimes the French refer to Cabernets, which could mean either of the two grapes. Its typical aromas include herbaceousness and a pronounced peppery nose, even in ripe fruit, and something like tobacco.

Example: Roast duck in a plum sauce is well-served by red wines, like barbera or syrah, with pronounced black plum flavors while grilled steak in a pepper sauce will go beautifully with a peppery zinfandel.
