NEBBIOLO: Has synonym names of Spanna in the northern hills of Piedmont, Italy; Picutener and Pugnet are two local clones grown in the Carema DOC, N.W. Piedmont. Also the Chiavennasca vine in Lombardy.

 


NEBBIOLO: (has synonym names of Spanna in the northern hills, Picutener and Pugnet in N.W. Piedmont and as Chiavennasca grape in Lombardy). Grape responsible for the long-lived, fine red wines of the Piedmont region of Italy.

Spanna - in Gattinara, a region in northern Piedmont.
Picutener - in many areas of Piedmont, but most often in the Carema and Donnaz DOCs.

Nebbiolo has a wide range of synonyms used in various local districts of northwest Italy. In the areas of Novara and Vercelli it is known widely as Spanna. In the Val d'Aosta region and around Carema it is known as Picutener.

gives them a "foggy" or "frosted" look, so the name could come from from "nebbia", Italian for "fog". It is an alternative possibility that the name simply comes from "nobile", Italian for "noble". Nebbiolo also goes by the names Spanna, Picutener ...
