PONTAC: A red-wine grape variety that behaves as a teinturier colorant and originally native to south-west France but, at last report, now only to be found on small acreages in the Constantia region of South Africa.

 


Historical note: Haut-Brion was founded by the de Pontac family, but was lost to one of Napoleon's ministers, see article on their other Château here. All the wines are graded together and alphabetically.

The only first-growth to be American-owned and Bordeaux's first internationally acclaimed winemaking estate, Château Haut-Brion dates back to 1525 when Jean de Pontac married Jeanne de Bellon who brought to him in her dowry the land of Haut-Brion.

the estate subsequently came to the noble De Gascq family, at which point this gigantic property was recognised as one of the greatest of all the Médoc, second only to the four accepted first growths of the era, Latour, Lafite, Margaux and Pontac ...

A blend made up exclusively of varietals grown in Bordeaux namely: cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, petit verdot and pontac.

White Constantia was produced with Muscat à Petit Grains and some Muscat of Alexandria was probably added as well as Pontac, a red berried grape whose origins are not certain.
