Premier cru: French for "first growth;" a high-quality vineyard but one not as good as grand cru.

Premier Cru (preh-m'yay crew)

Premier Cru
About 600 vineyards merit the appellation "Premier Cru". They have been officially designed from the old habits which accepted them as best wines.

Premier cru. a first growth-the highest quality vineyard. Although in Burgundy, Grand crus rank higher.
Pretty. Describes a wine of delicacy and finesse.
Primary aromas. Fresh fruit aromas suggestive of the wine varietal.

A "first growth", relevant where the term is controlled (such as in Burgundy). Pertaining to a specific area, or wine from that area.
premier grand cru...

"Premier Cru" vineyards in Burgundy are those that are considered significantly better than the basic village wines. These vineyards are generally better situated in terms of slope, direction,and soil.

The premier cru vineyards of Pommard are contiguous with those of Beaune, the broad spread narrowing to create a phalanx which runs directly through the middle of the commune, broken only by the village of Pommard itself.

Chablis wines are classified according to the following categories, from the lower to the higher: Petit Chablis, Chablis, Chablis Premier Cru and Chablis Grand Cru.

in 1855, 61 red wines of the Médoc (including one from graves: Chateau haut-Brion) were classified as "cru classé", which were divided inti five ranks determined by price (and therefore, in theory, quality), ranging from "premier cru" (first growth) ...

There are four different quality levels: regional (e.g. Bourgogne), village wines (e.g. Meursault, Santenay or Gevrey-Chambertin), premier cru and grand cru.

They are Regional Appellation, Village Wine, Premier Cru, and Grand Cru. The lowest (and cheapest) is the regional appellation wines (usually just named Bourgogne Blanc or Rouge).

This beautifully complex Premier Cru Chardonnay had its usual cheessy barrel ferment complexity and subtle hazelnutty fruit. However what rang my bells was its unmistakable creamy texture that seduced my palate with every mouthful.

Luckily most of the grand and premier cru vineyards escaped with relatively little harm done to their vines.

In the Meursault region, the premier cru vineyards planted at Meursault-Charmes have topsoil almost 78 inches (2.0 m) above limestone and the resulting wines are very rich and rounded.

Cru: French word for "growth". Superior growths are classified by several names including Grand Cru and Premier Cru.

Fairly unique, I'd say it's what you would get if you crossed a rich Chablis Premier Cru with a Pouilly Fume. Drink it with almost any appetizers, smoked fish, cured meats, seafood, poultry, pork, or spicy foods.
