In Burgundy there are two main wines to know: Red Burgundy (Pinot Noir) and White Burgundy (Chardonnay).

The sea that covered Burgundy receded about 70 million years ago, and the mountains to the east began to move skyward 35 million years after that.

In France, for example, red Burgundy is made from the pinot noir grape; red Bordeaux is made from cabernet sauvignon, merlot or a blend of both. In Italy, the famous wines of Chianti are made mostly from the sangiovese grape.

Predominantly raspberry and strawberry, with a hint of game.

Because of this, such grape-names as Cabernet Sauvignon for red Bordeaux, Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc for Sauternes, Pinot Noir for red Burgundy and Chardonnay for white Burgundy, (etc), are now embedded in the "wine-speak" language.

Makes Champagne and the great red Burgundy wines. Light of color and best drunk with a good amount of age. Also planted in Germany as Spatburgunder and Italy as Pinot Nero but usually simple and light here.

(There's also a red Burgundy-"Bourgogne Rouge"-just in case you're wondering). However, the bottle won't say Chardonnay and often won't even identify itself as Bourgogne.
