Red wines, conversely, grow paler as they age. Young reds range in color from a translucent cherry for lighter wines such as Beaujolais or Pinot Noir to a deep ruby, sometimes with purplish tints, for a Zinfandel or Syrah.

Red wines generally have green bottles.
White table wines generally have tall green or amber bottles. Dessert wines such as Sauternes have white bottles.

Most red wines and some whites are fermented and/or matured in oak barrels of varying sizes. Oak adds flavour, texture and complexity to wines. Barriques hold 225 litres, hogsheads 300 litres and puncheons 500 litres.

Great red wines that can be aged for decades typically are very tannic. It is the tannins that break down over the course of the bottle's life to mellow the wine and allow the wine to incorporate over the years.

BAGA: Red wine grape widely grown in the Bairada DOC, Beiras region of Portugal. Produces acidic, tannic wines capable of aging well; especially the "garrafeira" (special reserve) versions.

Vigorous

Mercaptans
An unpleasant, rubbery smell of old sulfur; encountered mainly in very old white wines.

Durif, red wine grape that is considered by some a cross between Syrah and a variety called Peloursin, grown in the Rhône valley in the late 19th and up to the middle of the 20th century.

BAGA:
Red wine grape widely grown in Portugal. Produces acidic, tannic wines capable of aging well.

Cellar aged red wines at their peak will show a deep golden-orange colour as it thins at the surface edge. If the wine colour has deepened into a distinctly brown-orange tint at the edge it usually indicates a wine past its peak and declining.

Inky: A red wine that tastes metallic, acidic and often rather thin.
Lean: A thin wine lacking in fruit but not acid.
Legs: Columns of wine that trickle down the inside of a glass that indicates high alcohol content in wine.

Sediment:As red wines age, color pigments and tannins bond together and fall out of solution, producing a natural sediment. While the sediment is not harmful, it tastes bitter and adversely affects the wine's mouthfeel.

Tired
A tired wine is uninteresting, old and dull. It has oxidized and the taste long since peaked, much like a wine writer who has been at his craft too long and is grumpy in all his assessments.

Barbaresco: Red wine from the Northern region of Piedmont, Italy. It is lighter than a Barolo and made from Nebbiolo grapes.

Quite common in red wines, particularly Merlot, Pinot Noir and Chianti's.

browning
As red wines age, their color changes from ruby/purple to dark ruby, to medium ruby, to ruby with an amber edge, to ruby with a brown edge. When a wine is browning it is usually fully mature and not likely to get better.

Varieties for red wines
André
Origin: (Blaufränkisch (Lemberger) x St. Laurent). The variety was created in Velké Pavlovice in 1961. It was named after CH. K.

Mulled Wine
Red wine that has been mixed with sugar, lemon, and spices, usually including cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Served hot.

Red winemaking process in which tannins, pigments and flavour compounds are released from the grape skins in the fermentation vessel.

Merlot
Fine red wine grape widely planted in Bordeaux and California. Often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon.
Mesoclimate
The unique climate of a subsection of a wine region.

Charbono: A red wine grape originally from Italy but now grown elsewhere as well. It produces full-bodied, often tannic wines, highly prized by some; yet it hasn't achieved widespread acceptance around the world.

For example, most red wines are very strong and can over power food. That's why steak and other hearty foods are paired with red wines - because the hearty foods can stand up to the strong red wine.

Port
A sweet red wine that is made by adding neutral grape spirit (brandy) to the unfinished wine. This is the process known as fortification and increases the alcohol level.
