This is a clear, dark reddish-purple wine, blackish in the glass. Black-cherry and brown-spice aromas add a whiff of oaky vanillins; swirling the glass brings up perfumed notes and a heightened sense of alcohol.

 


Reserva (Spain)
In Spain, red wines designated as reserva have received a minimum of three years ageing prior to release, of which at least one must be in oak. Related terms include Gran Reserva and Crianza.

Reserva: A Spanish term for a red wine that has spent at least three years maturing in barrels and bottles before release (at least two years for rosé or white wines).

RESERVA
A Spanish and Portuguese quality grade for the wines of particular vintage meeting specific requirements. Spanish reds must have min aging of 36 months, whites 24 months. In Portugal, the alcohol content must be 0.

Gran Reserva
This is a Spanish term for aged, top-quality wines from very good vintages. Red wines must be aged for 5 years; white and rose wines must be aged for 4 years.

Reserva wines are usually produced in particularly favorable years with grapes harvested in quality areas, they usually are more concentrated than Crianza even though they do not always have a higher structure.

We made reservations six months in advance for the chef's table and, by total accident, happened to be there on Father's Day, which was a treat for John.

Riserva/Reserva. Italian/Spanish term for "reserve" indicating longer aging before release and suggesting higher quality. Regulations determine how long this is for individual wines.

Grapes are known to be high in beneficial phytochemicals such as flavanoid and reservatrol which act as powerful antioxidants. These natural chemicals also help combat the free radicals that are thought to contribute to cellular degeneration.

Finally, "Rioja Gran Reserva" wines have been aged at least two years in oak and three years in bottle. Reserva and Gran Reserva wines are not necessarily produced each year.

All the top growers reported a first-class harvest, with classic Reserva wines prominent and Gran Reserva averaged 8% against an annual figure of less than 7%.

Its two top wines are the vintage Unico, with the current release of 1999, and the nonvintage Unico Reserva Especial, blending wines of three different vintages from the 1990s. The Web site wine-searcher.

Crianza (Spain)
A term describing the ageing that a wine has undergone. This is the youngest category, which is aged for two years, with at least six months in barrel. Related terms include Reserva and Gran Reserva.

There is no doubt that you will visit the famous wineries, so make an attempt to seek out the smaller, family-owned wineries. Many of these smaller wineries are required by law to take reservations only, so call ahead to make an appointment.

Barbaresco is considered the lighter of the two and has less stringent DOCG regulations, with the normale bottlings requiring only 9 months in oak and 21 months of total aging and the reserva bottlings requiring 45 total months of aging.
