The world of wine is sometimes like the old Wild West. Winemakers can put anything they want on a wine label and it means nothing at all. Reserve is one of those cases.

Reserve wine
In methode Champenoise, wine that is held to be blended into the cuvees of future vintages.
Residual sugar
Sugar remaining in the wine after fermentation, often referred to by winemakers as "RS".

Reserve wines
Every harvest, Bollinger saves some wine from the grand crus and premier crus for reserve wines. The reserves are bottled in magnums (1.5 L) with cork, under light pressure and aged for five to fifteen years.

These two categories include Reserve and Gran Reserve wines which differ according to the time of aging.

As well as the ratio of varieties used the percentage of reserve wines, the older wines that are blended in to give character and depth, can have a significant effect on the taste.

Ask if they have any reserve wines available for tasting. Don't be ashamed if you can't afford them.

A term with no legal definition in the United States, it is implied reserve wines are aged longer and made better than regularly bottled wines.
Robust
One of the wine definitions meaning full-bodied, full-flavored and high in alcohol content.

Reserva - Spanish and Portuguese term for a reserve wine.
Reserve - A term given to wine to indicate that it is of higher quality than usual.

In Italy, reserve wine means that the wine has been given more ageing before release and has a higher alcoholic strength by a half or full degree than the non-Riserva wine.

The bottle is then topped up with a dosage of reserve wine, sweetened to the right amount for the determined style, also known as the liqueur d'expedition. Modern bottling lines accomplish these tasks mechanically with amazing speed and precision.
