Rheingau valley with the River Rhein
The Rheingau (in English: Rhine District) is the hill country on the north side of the Rhine River between Wiesbaden and Rüdesheim near Frankfurt, reaching from the western Taunus to the Rhine.

The Rheingau is not so dramatic, the slopes are much gentler alongside the river; nevertheless, they are still slopes, and they afford the vines a wonderful aspect.

Riesling is best known for producing the wines of Germany 's Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Pfalz, Rheinhessen and Rheingau wines, but it also achieves brilliance in Alsace and Austria .

Riesling originated in the Rheingau region of southwestern Germany. It has been cultivated in Germany at least since the Fifteenth Century. Riesling is the dominant grape variety in Germany.

The late-ripening Riesling's heartland is the steep Mosel and Rheingau valleys of Germany, where it produces wines rich in crisp, lime and appley flavours and honeyed richness.

Riesling has its origins in the Rheingau region of Germany.
In Australia James Busby listed Rischling in his 1832 collection and it is known that William Macarthur imported some Riesling vines from the Bas-Rhin in 1838.

Historically, Riesling has roots in Germany's Rheingau region that date back to at least the 15th century. There are 13 designated German wine regions, with the top 4 or 5 worth committing to memory.
