Coming further across is the Ribera del Duero, a region of vineyards situated around the Duero river, which, as it flows west through Portugal, becomes the Douro, home to the vineyards that give rise to Port.

It's just over the border from Ribera del Duero, but it belongs there anyway. Abadia Retuerta is one of the largest bodegas in the area and has top-end and value wines.

Ribera del Duero lacks the long history of Rioja and was recognized as an official wine region in 1982.

Tempranillo is a primary red wine grape for much of Spain, especially those from the Ribera del Duero and the Rioja Alta. It is also a key blending varietal in Port and known by the name of tinta roriz in Portugal's Douro Valley.

However, old vine grapes have been successfully used by a Ribera del Duero winery to create an appealingly complex, aromatic wine. The grape is also widely grown in several South American regions, presumably due to colonial influence.

Barrica Bordelesa (Bordeaux cask) Barrel used to age Bordeaux wine and whose use has now spread to many other wine-producing areas e.g. Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Navarra, Valdepeņas etc. The barrel's capacity is 225 litres.

This accolade is currently being fought over by Ribera del Duero (rich Tempranillo-based reds) and Priorato (small quantities of dense, mineralic wines from low yielding Grenache and Carignan planted on steep terraces).
