Right Bank - The bank of a river that is to your right if you position yourself in the middle of the river and look downstream. In Bordeaux, this would be the bank containing Saint Emilion and Pomerol.
On the right bank of Tanaro river there is another wine area, Roero, which is recently getting, rightly, higher and higher interest.
The easiest way to understand Bordeaux is to split it into the left and right banks of the Gironde estuary, around which this huge region is arranged.
Bordeaux would be nothing without Merlot; it's the primary grape in the Right Bank's St.-Emilion and Pomerol and overall, is double the acreage of Cabernet Sauvignon throughout the Bordeaux region.
While Merlot seemed to thrive in clay and limestone based soils (such as those of the Right Bank regions of the Gironde estuary), Cabernet Sauvignon seemed to perform better in the gravel based soil of the Médoc region on the Left Bank.
For example, red wines from villages that lie on the river's "right bank" in Bordeaux will have predominately Merlot grapes in the blend, while the "left bank" Bordeaux producers will lean more heavily on Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.
In France Cabernet Franc is to be found in the Loire Valley, especially in the areas round Chinon and Bourgueil, in the Bordeaux area especially on the right bank of the Gironde round St. Emilion and Pomerol.
In 1973, Rolland and his wife bought into an oenology lab on the Right Bank of Bordeux in the town of Libourne. They took over full control of the lab in 1976 and expanded it to include tasting rooms.
