Rioja is a wine from a region named after the Rio Oja in Spain, a tributary of the Ebro. It is made from grapes grown in the provinces of La Rioja, Southern Álava, or Navarre.

Rioja: A well-known region in Spain known for traditional red wines made from the Tempranillo grape.
Rosé: French for "pink," and used to describe a category of refreshing wines that are pink in color but are made from red grapes.

El Coto de Rioja Rosado 2005 (Spain) $10
The El Coto de Rioja Rosado has an intense pink color and offers a smooth palate feel, with the dominant flavors of cherry and raspberry. This is a fresh and lively wine with a semi-dry finish.
It is the dominant grape in the red wines from Rioja and Ribera del Duero, two of Spain 's most important wine regions. In Rioja, Tempranillo is often blended with Garnacha, Mazuelo and a few other minor grapes.
Carignan is believed to have originated in Spain in the Aragon region and was historically a component of neighboring Rioja's red wine blend. From Spain it gained prominence in Algeria and fed that country's export production to France.
Bigger reds such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Nebbiolo from Italy, Shiraz from Australia, Rioja Reservas from Spain, Rhõne wines, more expensive Burgundy and Bordeaux wines, are best when served at 60°-65° F, and please hold the cubes.
Denominación de Origen Calificada (DoCa) A controversial higher category of Quality Wine introduced by the Spanish government in 1988 and awarded to Rioja in 1991.
Cavas may come from some villages in the provinces of La Rioja and Alava (parts of D.O. Rioja), of Navarra (parts of D.O. Navarra) and of Zaragossa (parts of D.O. Cariñena).
"Some of the most expensive wines in Spain come from Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa," Pancho Campo, founder and president of the Wine Academy of Spain, says. "They are getting almost perfect ripeness every year now for Tempranillo.
TEMPRANILLO: Fine red wine grape used in best Rioja wines of Spain. Also known under the alias names of Cencibel and Valdepeñas. In Portugal the grape is known as the (Tinta) Roriz. Large acreages are grown in Argentina.
Graciano is a variety once widespread in Rioja and Navarra but loosing favour because of its low yields. It shows a good colour and a fragrant bouquet as well as an ability to age well.
Tempranillo is to be found in Northern and Central Spain especially in the Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavea, in Portugal in Aleutejo and Douro, where it is used predominantly in the production of port, and in France in the Midi/Aude region.

Cloying
Describes sweet wines that lack the acidity to balance their sugar content. Rather than leaving the palate clean, a sticky, gummy sensation remains.
When blended with Tempranillo improves many Riojas. In the warmer regions of California the Grenache grape produces pale red wines that are mainly useful for blends. Older vines can yield varietals often as a rosé.
