Riserva (ree-zair-vah)
In Italian wine laws this term can only be used for wines that have been aged for a period before release. The length of time varies by region. It is three years for Chianti Riserva, but five for Barolo or Brunello Riserva.

Riserva: Made from a blend of grapes.
Chianti Classico: A DOC red from a designated inner portion of the Chianti wine district. TO be labeled Chianti Classico, both the vineyards and the winery must be within the delimited region.

Riserva: (Spanish) A quality standard. Riserva wines are derived from excellent vintages and are aged longer (both in oak and bottle) before release.

Riserva - (Ree-SEHR-vah)
Under Italian wine law, a wine aged for a designated period before bottling; regulations vary from one region to another in terms of the exact period and whether wood aging is required, but are always specific.

Riserva/Reserva. Italian/Spanish term for "reserve" indicating longer aging before release and suggesting higher quality. Regulations determine how long this is for individual wines.

Ruffino's Riserva Ducale Chianti Classico emerged well with bottle age as did Isola e Olena, Monsanto and Vicchiomaggio. Altesino and Barbi Colombini made very successful Brunello, but Biondi Santi for example did not produce a Riserva.

What matters most is that this wine is an affordable alternative to Chianti Riservas that cost around five to ten dollars more.

In Italy, reserve wine means that the wine has been given more ageing before release and has a higher alcoholic strength by a half or full degree than the non-Riserva wine.

But better Chianti - look for Chianti Classico, perhaps Riserva, that costs $20 to $25 - is beautiful, complex wine. With some age, you'll see that it develops even more elegance and layers of flavor. Antinori is always a good name to look for.
