RUSTIC
Synonym for "rough".
SALTY
One of the basic taste sensations detected by the receptors in the human tongue. Not an acceptable character in wine.

Nose is almost rustic, with good earthy character, ripe black fruits, and black pepper. On the palate you get muted blackberry, black raspberry, black pepper, earth. Acidity and tannins are both appropriately medium intensity, providing good backbone.

The variety is very rustic, generous and adapted for soils having a high content of clay and which are not well exposed. The basal buds are of medium fertility. The bunches are of medium dimension and have a cylindrical shape.

The Brits took the rustic Portuguese wine, added brandy to stop fermentation and to fortify it for the journey by ship. Thus, Port was born. Today, Port is still made this way.

Gigondas wines generally are robust and with pretty rustic characters in which emerge aromas of red berried fruits and spices.

The wines are certainly robust, and in some hands quite rustic (although in others remarkably fine), reflecting their backwater origins.

It was too acidic, too rustic, too coarse, lacking flavor, and compromised too easily. Barbera's only apparent redeeming quality was its cheapness, or more modestly put, its value.

Hearty: Used to describe the full, warm, sometimes rustic qualities found in red wines with high alcohol.

Barnyard: very often in the smell of some Burgundies and Rhõnes you can imagine an animal-rich, even fecal setting (the euphemism is "rustic"). Many do not want to put the wine in their mouth when faced with this odor.

Very astringent wines, usually with high alcohol component, often have this rough, rustic taste characteristic. May become more tolerable with aging but also may not be worth the wait.

ABBUOTO: Red wine variety found in central Italy. Has synonym names of Aboto and Cecubo. Used to make a deeply colored, rustic, dry wine blend with moderate aging ability of up to about 8 years or so.

GROLLEAU
A red-wine grape widely grown in France. In the Loire region, it is blended with Gamay Noir and Cabernet Franc to create a somewhat rustic dry and semi-sweet Anjou rosé. Also called Groslot.

SCIACCARELLO:
Minor grape grown mainly in Corsica. Used in rustic red wine blends of local character along with Malvoisie and others.

A chewy wine is big and burly, feeling almost like a solid in your mouth rather than an ethereal light liquid. This is a common descriptor for full-bodied wines that are a bit rustic like some Syrahs, Chateauneuf-du-Pape and others.

You probably didn't know this, but Lambrusco is actually a red Italian grape variety, and the best examples are dry, slightly fizzy, rustic red wines with high acidity, best with food.
