Areas such as Anderson Valley , Carneros, Monterey , Russian River , Santa Barbara and Santa Maria Valley , all closer to cooler maritime influences, are now producing wines far superior to those made a decade ago.

 


These contracting vineyards are some of the usual suspects in Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, Paso Robles, Napa Valley, and Sonoma County. In one sense, sourcing grapes from a third party removes one headache from winemaking, the farming migraine.

South of San Luis Obispo, along California south central coast, Santa Barbara County’s ocean-cooled valleys (Santa Maria, Los Alamos, and Santa Ynez), produce some of California’s finest wines, especially chardonnay, pinot noir, and syrah.

More significant is Santa Barbara, incorporating the Santa Maria Valley and Santa Ynez Valley AVAs. There is a mixture of wine styles produced, including varietal Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as some Rhône like wines.

In this large area are located pretty famous and interesting AVAs such as Santa Clara Valley, Santa Cruz Mountains, Monterey County, Mount Harlan, Carmel Valley, Chalone, Paso Robles, York Mountain, Edna Valley, Arroyo Grande, Santa Maria Valley and ...
