Savagnin or Savagnin Blanc is a white wine grape variety mostly grown in Jura in France.

 


SAVAGNIN BLANCProbably one of the most ancient V.vinifera c?pages in existence. Now regarded as a semi-classic variety and used to create the celebrated "Vin jaune" of the Jura region of France. Also known by the synonym name Frankisch in Austria.

SAVAGNIN
A semi-classic grape grown in the Jura region of France. Used to create the notable Vin Jaune, a maderized wine that takes several years to mature. Possibly identical to the Traminer grape. Also called Kleyner in the Alsace region of France.

The main white grape cultivated in Jura is Savagnin, whereas the main red varieties are Poulsard and Trousseau.

Still grown in France, where it is better known as Savagnin Blanc, and in California but almost everywhere else has been largely replaced by its much more intense and aromatic offspring Gewürztraminer clonal variety.

Bone-dry and searing acidity. What in the heck is it. I toy with the idea of a Savagnin from the Jura, but no ... it's an Anjou Chenin Blanc from the Loire by, McAuliffe says, "a funny wine maker, a rebel." ...
