Scheurebe (shoy'-reh-buh)
A German wine grape made by crossing Sylvaner and Riesling in 1916 by George Scheu (rebe means "vine" in German).

Scheurebe: This is a mix between Sylvaner and Johannisberg Riesling. It is mostly planted in Germany and is used for aromatic white wines.

Scheurebe (SHOY-ray-beh) - Modern German grape, a Riesling x Sylvaner cross, still rather uncommon but seen increasingly in sweeter, late-harvest wines from the Rhine. The better examples resemble Riesling, with a raisiny fruitiness.

SCHEUREBE
Newer variety grape from the Rhine region of Germany, made from a cross of Riesling and Sylvaner, that is generally used to produce sweet, late harvest wines.

Scheurebe...
White grape variety. German cross between Sylvaner and Riesling.
Schönberger...

SCHEUREBE: Has synonym name Alzey S. 88. In Austria it is known as Samling 88. Grape variety developed in 1916 at the Alzey Research Institute, Germany, from a cross between Silvaner and Riesling. Has good resistance to frost (to -5 deg. F. approx.

SCHEUREBE: Grape variety developed from a cross between Sylvaner and Riesling. Extensively planted in the Rheinhessen, Rheinfalz and Franconia regions of Germany. Currently, 1997, recommended for planting in S.W. Michigan and the N.W. USA.

Other varieties that play a part here include Scheurebe, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Traminer, the latter once regarded as something of a specialty of the region. There are also substantial plantings of Portugieser, a heavy-cropping black variety.

Other Riesling/Silvaner crosses include the Pfalz regional favorite Scheurebe and Rieslaner. Kerner, a cross between Riesling and the red wine grape Trollinger is a high quality cross that has recently eclipsed Riesling in plantings.

In this area are cultivated Gewürztraminer, Weissburgunder, Rülander, Spätburgunder, Müller-Thurgau, Kerner, Morio-Muskat and Scheurebe, the latter to be considered among the best grapes of Pfalz capable of producing interesting wines.

Ripens later than Scheurebe around early to mid-season. Has extraordinary Muscat bouquet and flavor when fully ripened and so mostly used sparingly in white wineblends. Reportedly not a true Muscat but a Silvaner x Pinot Blanc cross.
