SCUPPERNONG:
Native american Muscadine grape variant with the usual characteristic "musky" flavor. Mostly confined to the South-East and Gulf states of the U.S.

Scuppernong: One of the two major classes of Native American grapes. The wines are too pungent in flavor for most wine aficionados. However, the wine has its followers, especially in the Carolinas.

SCUPPERNONG: Historically notable native american Muscadine grape variant, (cultivated since 1809), with the usual characteristic "musky" flavor. Mostly confined to the South-East and Gulf states of the U.S.

rotundifolia grapes (Muscadine, Scuppernong, etc.) again make wines or primarily local interest.

Muscadine: colloquial name for the sub-genus of the vitis family of plants that thrive in our southeastern regions. Scuppernong is the most well-known variety of Muscadines.

Grown almost primarily in southeastern US and in Mexico, the Muscadine is a large grape with a thick skin. Scuppernong is a type of muscadine grape. They are very hearty and grow in places that other grapes might not.

Most native American grapes are found by winemakers to not make palatable wines. The two key exceptions are the Concord and Scuppernong grapes. Still, winemakers tried, and also tried planting imported grapevines to see if they would grow.
