Seyval Blanc (aka Seyve-Villard 5276) is a hybrid wine grape variety used to make white wines. It was produced by Bertille Seyve or his son in law Villard as a cross of Seibel 5656 and Seibel 4986.

 


Seyval Blanc
The best known white wine produced from the French- American hybrid group of grapes. These are a cross between the hearty eastern American grape family and more sophisticated tasting European varietals.

Seyval Blanc is a hybrid grape bred by Bertille Seyve and amoung the commonest three grape types planted in England.

SEYVAL BLANC: (aka Seyval). A french-american hybrid grape that can be used to make high quality white wines of various styles. Crisp, fruity dry versions have sometimes been likened to French "Chablis" in aroma and taste.

Examples include the hybrid Chardonel which was a Chardonnay and Seyval blanc cross produced in 1953 at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station.

However, if you "mix the streams" and cross a vitis vinifera with a vitis labrusca, you get a wine that purists would call "half foxy" :) Hybrids include grapes such as baco noir, vignoles, seyval blanc and chancellor.

Among the most important hybrids varieties of the state we find the white berried Cayuga, Niagara, Seyval Blanc, Vidal Blanc and Vignoles, whereas red varieties include Baco Noir, Catawba and Concord.

It is derived from a Seyval Blanc x (Riesling x Pinot Gris) cross. The named cultivar was originally designed to be further crossed with the Cabernet Sauvignon variety in order to produce a red-wine grape best suited to the german Alsace region ...

Hybrid grapes (Baco Noir, Seyval Blanc, Vidal Blanc, etc.) created from cross-pollinating European and American varieties, attempt to gain both the flavor characteristics of the former and the weather-hardiness of the latter, with some success.

In Europe, icewine is usually produced from Riesling, Ehrenfelser, and Gewurztraminer while Canada's production is focused on Vidal Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Seyval Blanc, and Merlot. There are even sparkling icewines being made.
