Silvaner (white)
A relatively elegant German variety than Riesling with pronounced acidity reaching its best expression in Franconia, and known as sylvaner in Alsace, where it is one of the lesser varietals.

Silvaner or Sylvaner has Eastern Europe as its origin, and is still widely planted in the Czech republic. It came to prominence as Germany's most planted grape before the productive Müller-Thurgau took over.

Silvaner Sylvaner is still to be found throughout Central Europe, in Germany and Alsace, France, although plantings have decreased considerably. There are now small plantings in California and Australia.

SILVANER (GRUEN): (a.k.a Sylvaner). The Geilweilerhof database (above) lists over 60 synonym names for this variety, including Osterreicher and Sonoma Riesling. Widely grown in the Alsace region of France, Germany and Central Europe.

Sylvaner / Silvaner (sil-vay'-ner)
Historically one of the major white wine grape varieties of Germany. Not as long lived or as intense as the Riesling grape, Sylvaner is still popular in parts of Germany.

Also known as, Silvaner, Gruner Silvaner, Osterreicher, Franken, Frankenriesling, Grunfrankisch, Salviner, Salvaner, Grunedel, Schonfeilner, Scharvaner, Botzinger, Silvain Vert, Gentil Vert, Picardon Blanc, Clozier, Gruner Zierfandl, Fleigentraube, ...

Sylvaner: (aka Silvaner) Widely grown in the Alsace region of France, Germany and Central Europe. Suited to temperate zones, the vine is high-yielding and the grape produces an "easy" white wine with lightly spicy, floral flavors and mild intensity.

Also a white grape variety, the product of a cross between a Silvaner-Riesling hybrid and Müller-Thurgau. backwardWines described as backward are undeveloped and not ready to drink.

White grapes mainly cultivated in Germany are Müller-Thurgau, Riesling and Silvaner.

Müller Thurgau (Riesling x Silvaner, Rivaner)
Původ: The variety was created by Professor H. Müller from the Swiss canton Thurgau in 1882. It is mentioned as the cross-bred vine of Rhine Riesling and Green Silvaner.

Grape variety developed in 1916 at the Alzey Research Institute, Germany, from a cross between Silvaner and Riesling. Has good resistance to frost (to -5 deg. F. approx. -20 C.) and usually ripens in mid-late season (mid-September to October).

German grape (sometimes spelled Silvaner there), considered secondary to Riesling in quality but planted widely as a blending grape. Vinified as a varietal, it makes a light, fruity quaffing wine.

Sylvaner
Often spelled Silvaner in Germany. It produces a lighter, shorter lived wine than the noble Riesling. Also grown in Alsace, California and Switzerland.

GLORIA: Wine/tablegrape derived from a Silvaner x Müller-Thurgau cross developed at the Geilweilerhof Institute, Germany. Used to make a neutral, full-bodied white wine with faint aroma that will attain higher sugar and lower acidity than Silvaner.
