Germany's great Rieslings are usually made slightly sweet, with strong, steely acidity for balance, a style of wine so variant from the French, Italian and U.S.

Contrary to the popular misconception that Riesling wines are always sweet, Riesling varies from a dry, acidic wine, to a slightly sweet wine to a very sweet wine that can happen when grapes are affected by noble rot (botrytis) or frost.

It is often regarded as somewhat similar in style to the (Johannisberg) Riesling - (below) - when vinified as slightly sweet yet tart. Occasionally it is made into a "botrytized" late harvest dessert style wine.

Produced both in a dry or slightly sweet style, it is best know in the US as the brand Riunite (which is one of the sweetest examples made). In Italy, it is easier to find the drier styles, and they are a great match for the rich foods of the region.

Describes the brownish color and slightly sweet, somewhat caramelized and often nutty character found in mature dessert-style wines.
Malic
Describes the green apple-like flavor found in young grapes which diminishes as they ripen and mature.

Much of it is vinified into white Zinfandel, a blush-colored, slightly sweet wine. Real Zinfandel, the red wine, is the quintessential California wine. It has been used for blending with other grapes, including Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah.

Champagnes and sparkling wines range in style from very dry (Natural), dry (brut) and slightly sweet (extra Dry) to sweet (sec and Demi-Sec).

Lambrusco. A red grapes grown all over Italy, used to make slightly sweet, effervescent wines. It Italy also used for still wines that should be drunk young.

Nearly as versatile as Chardonnay in the number of different styles of wine produced from it, it has only achieved widespread popularity in America since 1980, as a pink, slightly sweet wine.

Rieslings have a floral aroma. They range from very dry and crisp to intensely sweet depending on where it is from. German Riesling is slightly sweet and balanced with some acidity. California Riesling tends to be sweeter.

In South Africa its ability to retain freshness (this factor was also very important in its original use for South african brandy distillation) whilst being vinified very slightly sweet are capitalised upon with considerable success.

"Kabinet" wines will be just slightly sweet, whereas "halbtrocken" wines will be almost dry. There are some softer style California Chardonnays. Look for Mountain View, Alderbrook, Raymond Reserve or even the Fetzer Sundial.
