Super Tuscan: A red wine from Tuscany that is not made in accordance with established DOC rules; often a blended wine of superior quality containing Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Merlot.
Supple: A term used to describe smooth, balanced wines.

Super Tuscans
The term "Super Tuscan" describes any Tuscan red wine that does not adhere to traditional blending laws for the region.

Super Tuscan
Wines from theTuscany region in Italy made using international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah rather than relying primarily on local varieties such as Sangiovese.

Fontodi's Super Tuscan Sangiovese Flaccianello was one of the successes of the Chianti area. Another was Antinori's Tignanello. Castello di Ama's Merlot L'Apparita again showed its vintage-proof qualities of fruit and body.

Cabernet Sauvignon has had a controversial history in Tuscan wine, particularly for its role in the arrivals of "Super Tuscan" in the mid 1970s.

A medium-bodied red wine will contain more tannins than the above Beaujolais Nouveau, but will not have near the pucker power of a high-powered California Cabernet Sauvignon or an Italian Super Tuscan.

2) Plan to make traditional blends such as 'Bordeaux' from Cab Sauv, Merlot, Cab Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot or 'Super Tuscan' from Sangiovese, Merlot, Cab Sauv and Syrah.

Once dismissed as "pizza wine" and served in wicker-wrapped fiaschi bottles, it's now more respected as a serious table wine, and has given rise in turn to pricey "Super Tuscan" wines incorporating Sangiovese, ...

It's an IGT, and could be considered a "baby Super Tuscan". All those great grapes put together, spending a full year in oak barrels, and then another four months in bottle before release, and yet it still retails for under twenty bucks. Amazing.

The rising trend to create Cabernet Sauvignon based, or blended wines, has led to the unofficial designation "Super Tuscans" for these expensive and much sought after wines.

Chianti, Classico, Frascati, Grappa, Lambrusco, Malbec, Marsala, Merlot, Montepulciano D'Abruzzo, Morellino, Moscato, Nebbiolo, Nero D'Avola, Piedmont, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir, Prosecco, Rioja, Ripasso, Rosé, Sangiovese, Soave, Super Tuscan (others ...

In Australia, it's often blended with Shiraz and in Tuscany, with Sangiovese or stands alone in the coveted and pricey Super Tuscan wines. Cabernet was originally created by crossing the white grape Sauvignon Blanc and the red grape Cabernet Franc.

The usual suspects under this larger format heading are typically fine Bordeaux, Champagne, California collectibles, and super Tuscan Italian wines, though other wine regions certainly produce larger format bottles.
