SYLVANER A high-yielding white-wine grape widely grown in the Alsace region of France, Germany and Central Europe. Used to produce a lightly spicy white with floral flavors and mild intensity. Less popular in California than Johannisberg Riesling.
Sylvaner [Scharvaner] In Germany this is the fat counterpoint to Riesling's grace, but at best it can be equally aristocratic and full of character. Unfortunately it can crop heavily, with bland consequences.
Sylvaner Often spelled Silvaner in Germany. It produces a lighter, shorter lived wine than the noble Riesling. Also grown in Alsace, California and Switzerland.
Sylvaner: Sylvaner was once the most widely planted grape of Alsace, France, but now only accounts for 15% (and dropping). It is also grown in Germany and Central Europe. The grape produces a pleasant, but bland, white wine.

Silvaner or Sylvaner has Eastern Europe as its origin, and is still widely planted in the Czech republic. It came to prominence as Germany's most planted grape before the productive Müller-Thurgau took over.

It does have distant relatives in the Sylvaner (or Franken) Riesling and the crosses, Emerald Riesling (with Muscadelle du Bordelais) and Müller-Thurgau (with Sylvaner).
