Probably originated in Tremin in Germany, this is the Italian strain of the grape which is the main source of Gewurztraminer. The Italian variety is less aromatic.

Gewürztraminer, sometimes referred to as Gewürz or Traminer, is a white wine grape variety that performs best in cooler climates. It is known for its spicy characteristics.

Gewürztraminer is one of the most pungent wine varietals, easy for even the beginning taster to recognize by its heady, aromatic scent.

Gewürztraminer is a pink-skinned, small-clustered grape variety that sets a modest crop and ripens fully in propitious, cool-climate conditions, producing heady, alcoholic, dry table wines, at least in Alsace.

Grand Cru Gewurztraminer is one of those wines that seems to divide opinions. I've often wondered what the fuss was about, as I simply love good Gewurztraminer, but in more recent times I have also met wine drinkers who detest the stuff.

The parent grape of the popular Gewurztraminer clone, which is now favored for its greater spiciness and intensity. Still grown in small acreages in France and California.

Another name for Ugni Blanc.

Still grown in France, where it is better known as Savagnin Blanc, and in California but almost everywhere else has been largely replaced by its much more intense and aromatic offspring Gewürztraminer clonal variety.

One of the great white wine grapes of the world, often overlooked in the US. The name means "spicy" traminer (traminer being a related type of grape).

Gewurztraminer has a spicy aroma and fruity flavors of peach, apricot, tropical fruits, and lychee. It can be dry or sweet.

Typically thought of as a German varietal, this grape actually originated in northern Italy. It is often made in sweet or off-dry styles and carries floral and spice notes.

Gewurztraminer - Gewurztraminer is a white wine that produces distinctive wines rich in spicy aromas and full flavors, ranging from dry to sweet.

Gewürztraminer: Associated with Germany and the Alsace region of France, this can be a full-bodied, flavored, dry white wine. California gewürztraminers, however, are usually light-bodied and sweet.

Gewürztraminer: Late Harvest
The Gewürztraminer grape was first grown in Northern Italy, where it produces a white wine of the same name. Today Gewürztraminers are produced in Alsace, Germany, New Zealand, America, Canada and many other regions.

Gewurztraminer and Riesling are most famous in German/Alsatian wines, but since I have very little experience with German wine, I will restrict myself to some brief comments on the American wines which are made from these grapes.

GEWÜRZTRAMINER: ("geh-verts-tram-in-er"). A clone of the parent Traminer variety. Widely grown, having literally dozens of synonym names in various countries including Traminer Rot.

The world's most prestigious gewürztraminers come from the Alsace region of France, but the white grape is also grown in most of the same cold climates riesling is.

The viticulture of New Zealand is mainly oriented towards the cultivation of the so called "international" species and, among white grapes, there are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Müller Thurgau and Gewürztraminer, ...

Pinot Blanc is an especially nice and well priced Alsatian varietal, but a Gewürztraminer, Tokay, or Riesling would also be of interest. American Gewürztraminers tend to be a bit too sweet, but there are exceptions.

Some grapes-notably Gewürztraminer and Muscat-often have a noticeable bitter edge to their flavors. Bitterness can also be imparted by the use of underripe or green stems during the fermentation and aging processes.

Choose Riesling and sweet Gewürztraminer if your meal is spicy. The sweetness of these wines can be drank quickly to offset the spiciness of the food.
Select a white wine with chicken, fish, and seafood.

Sometimes one wishes to finish a wine with some residual sugar left-Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Muscat Canelli and Chenin Blanc are among the grapes that lend themselves particularly well to this.

Some grapes--notably Gewurztraminer and Muscat--often have a noticeable bitter edge to their flavors. Another source of bitterness is tannin or stems. If the bitter quality dominates the wine's flavor or aftertaste, it is considered a fault.

Usually they are made out of Gewurztraminer and Riesling (for white wines). This wine was pure peach/pear/apricot on the nose. It was one of those wines that you had to keep smelling in the glass because it kept showing more and more components.

Some grapes - (Gewurztraminer, Muscat) - have a distinct bitter edge to their flavor. If the bitter component dominates in the aroma or taste of a wine it is considered a fault.

Gewurztraminer is the wine variety that is most often referred to as spicy. Also, the smell or taste sensation reminiscent of spices. The Gewurztraminer varietal flavor is naturally spicy, especially when grown in cool climates.

Alsace, in northwest France, produces some delicious full flavoured white wines from grape varieties such as Gewürztraminer, Tokay Pinot Gris, Riesling, Muscat, Pinot Blanc and Sylvaner.

Rich
Rich dishes overpower delicately flavored, lighter bodied wines. Serve with full flavored, full bodied, higher acid wines.

Peach: Specific fruit description, often found in Riesling or Gewurztraminer and sometimes in dessert wines.
Pear: Specific fruit description, typically associated with Chardonnay aged in toasted oak barrels.

Spicy
The characteristic spice-like smell and taste encountered in many wines, sometimes due to a certain grape variety, such as Gewurztraminer. Some wines have flavors reminiscent of allspice, cinnamon, cloves, pepper or other spices.

Green: Tasting of unripe fruit. Wines made from unripe grapes will often possess this quality. Pleasant in Riesling and Gewürztraminer.

Torrontés: Argentine grape born in Spain of the Muscat grape. Pale gold; aromatic; citrusy with tropical fruits. Refreshing when very cold; similar to a dry Gerwürztraminer.
