TREBBIANO or UGNI BLANC (White) [treh-bee-AH-no or OO-nee BLAHNK] This is Trebbiano in Italy andUgni Blancin France . It is tremendously prolific; low in alcohol but high in acidity, it is found in almost any basic white Italian wine.
Trebbiano is the most common name for the undistinguished Ugni Blanc grape. It has many mutations and sub-varieties such as Procanico in Tuscany and Umbria.
It's an insipid variety, known in France as Ugni Blanc, where its use as the basis for brandy (as in Mexico too) speaks volumes.
Look closely and you may also find small areas planted to Ugni Blanc and Colombard.
Grown in France as the Ugni Blanc where it is also the most planted white variety. In most cases a very ordinary wine is produced unless yields are severely limited. Often distilled to make brandy, i.e., Cognac being the most famous.
