Veraison (veh-ray-zohn)
A viticultural term originally from the French. Young grapes are tiny, hard and green. As they swell and ripen they take on the color they will be when they are harvested.

veraison: A stage in the ripening process of grapes whereby the grape begins to soften and starts to accumulate colour, flavour and tannin.
vermouth: A fortified wine flavoured with various herbs and primarily used as a cocktail ingredient.

Veraison - The stage when grapes on the vine begin to soften and gain colour. The grapes start to gain sugar at this point.

Veraison (Vay-ray-zoN) - First appearance of color in ripening grapes.
Verdicchio (Vehr-DEEK-yo) - Italian white-wine grape from the Adriatic coast of Central Italy; at its best, tart and suffused with an appealing bitter-almond quality.

Veraison: The first grape color change, from green to purple (black grapes), or green to yellow-green (white grapes), accompanied by a softening of the texture. This is considered to be the first step in the maturation of grapes on the vine.

Veraison began mid July ahead of schedule. The vineyards were well developed and in a healthy state and production forecasts at this time looked promising.

Veraison The stage of the growing season when young green grapes soften and either turn yellow or red in color depending on the variety. In Napa Valley veraison can occur from late June through mid-August, depending on the year.

About mid-Summer, comes veraison, the onset of ripening as the grapes begin to soften and swell significantly, while green varieties turn translucent and black grape varieties gain color.

After veraison the grapes turn a golden-grey color. The phenolic compounds in the grape contribute to the wine's characteristically deep color.
