Vin
Unless otherwise specified, wine refers to the naturally fermented juice of grapes. More broadly, the term can include alcoholic beverages created from other fruits and even vegetables.

Vin Délimité de Qualité Superieure (Delimited Wine of Superior Quality) is the second highest ranking of wine, after AOC under the French ranking system.

Vin de Table - This is the laxest standard in French wine. Essentially a vin de table certifies only the producer and the fact that the wine is from France. Roughly half of all French wines earn this designation.

Vintage: A particular year in the wine business; a specific harvest.

vin santo: (Italian) A dessert wine made from dried grapes and barrel aged for a significant length of time. In Tuscany where it originated the wine is made from Trebbiano and Malvasia.

Vin Santo is mid-Italy's fortified wine. Most of it is made in Tuscany, but some comes from the surrounding regions. It's full bodied, but still light, and is a classic combination with biscotti or fruit.

Vin de Pays. Wine of the country. An everyday table wine.
Vintage. The year in which a wine's grapes were harvested; sometimes referring to the grape harvest itself.
Viticulture. The activity of growing grapes.

Vin de Pays:French quality classification meaning "country wine"; it is one level above vin de table.

In the making of red wine, one talks about a "Vin de Goutte", a wine drawn directly from the barrel, in other words it is obtained before the pressing of the wine harvest. It is the opposite of "Vin de Presse" which is poured from the press.

Semi-classic grape used to create the celebrated "Vin jaune" of the Jura region of France. Is one of the few wines in which maderization is desirable and acquired with long bottle-aging.

Classic French cooking has creations based on Pinot Noir, such as Coq au Vin (chicken cooked in red wine) Boeuf Bourginon, and Cassoulet.

SAVAGNIN
A semi-classic grape grown in the Jura region of France. Used to create the notable Vin Jaune, a maderized wine that takes several years to mature. Possibly identical to the Traminer grape. Also called Kleyner in the Alsace region of France.

Just as French vin de table now often indicates a cutting-edge wine rather than table plonk, simple Riojas may be something new and innovative.

The second method in making blush wines is to add just a dash of red wine to white wine. Voila! La Vin Rose' ! Might be a fun dinner party trick.

SAVAGNIN (BLANC): Semi-classic grape used to create the celebrated "Vin jaune" of the Jura region of France. Also known by the synonym name Frankisch in Austria.
