Viognier is the only grape used for the Northern Rhõne appellations Condrieu and Château-Grillet (one of France's smallest appellation contrõlée, with less than ten acres and only one owner).

 


Viognier
A few years ago, Viognier was a rarity. In 1965, only 8 hectares were found almost exclusively in Condrieu in the northern Rhõne.

Viognier grapes can be difficult to grow. Its vines do not produce high yields compared to other grapes and the variety is not very resistant to disease.

This clear, bright-gold wine breathes intense scents of orange blossom borne on heavy cream, nostalgically evoking childhood memories of Dreamsicles.

Not that they tried very hard to conceal it; their Viognier can be found in plain view, right out in the open in many wine retail shops. This is a solid value wine that has a less-than-shy floral, pear, and tropical fruit nose with agility to seduce.

Viognier
Most famous for Condrieu, a distinctive white wine of the Rhone Valley. Viognier became very fashionable in the 1990s and is now produced extensively in the United States and Europe.

Semi-classic white grape variety grown in the Rhone Valley, France and California. Has full, spicy flavors somewhat reminiscent of the Muscat grape and violets.

Viognier, the rare white grape of France's Rhône Valley, is one of the most difficult grapes to grow, But fans of the floral, spicy white wine are thrilled by its prospects in the south of France and the new world.

Viognier. The classic (though rare) white grape of the northern Rhone Valley of France where it makes the expensive wine known as Condrieu. In the early 1990s, more than thirty top California producers began making viognier to much acclaim.

Viognier is a variety often described as exotic and lush. It is certainly fashionable, particularly in California, probably as a result of being the grape of the rare and almost impossible to obtain Northern Rhône Château Grillet.

Viognier: A grape variety used for white wine blends in the Rhone Valley of France. It has a distinctive, though difficult to describe, character. Expect to see this used more and more in California.

Viognier was once fairly common. Now it is a rare white grape grown almost exclusively in the northern Rhõne regions of France.

In fact it is right here which are found the prestigious appellations of Hermitage, Cõte-Rõtie, Cornas, Condrieu and Château-Grillet, an appellation exclusively oriented to the production of white wines with Viognier grape with an acreage of 3.

This is a wine made solely from the Viognier grape, a lovely variety, which is also used to add interest to Côte Rôtie. This, in my opinion, is the Rhône's finest white wine.

For instance, we have included Pinot Grigio but not Viognier. Personally, we far prefer Viognier, but Pinot Grigio has become the most popular imported wine in America and therefore has placed itself on the list.

This wine is a blend of 95% Shiraz - a red grape - with 5% Viognier - a white grape. As you can see by the color of the wine, the white grape really doesn't affect the wine that much.

Less dry white wines such as Viognier or Riesling may be easier for a novice to appreciate than a very dry Sauvignon Blanc or an oaky Chardonnay.

Quince (apple): some northern white Rhõnes (from Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier grapes) recalI this flavor; however, it has also been noticed in such widely divergent wines such as Napa Sauvignon blancs and Italian Pinot Grigios.

Wines made from the Muscat or Viognier grape have a flowery component, and occasionally a red wine will have a floral scent.

The leading varieties in Texas are cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, merlot, sauvignon blanc and chenin blanc, but high-quality cabernet franc, pinot noir, zinfandel, sangiovese, and viognier are also produced.

White wines are also produced, the most well know of which is Condrieu, made from the exotically flavoured Viognier grape. Because quantities of wine produced in the Northern Rhône are small and quality is good, prices are invariably high.

Aromatic:Describes a wine with intense, often floral, aromas. Particularly aromatic varieties include Gewürztraminer, Muscat and Viognier.

Some regard it as reminiscent of wines made from the french Viognier grape grown in the northern Rhone region. Others find Pinot Gris of the U.S.

ARNEIS
A minor white-wine grape grown in the Piedmont region of Italy. Used to make aromatic wines such as Roero Arneis and Langhe Arneis, but lacks sufficient acidity to age well . Similar in character to Viognier, and sometimes, Pinot Gris.

Semillon and Viognier are generally more yellow. Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris (Grigio ) can have a light tannish-grey cast if allowed to fully ripen before made into wine. Most unnamed varietals fall in between these color ranges.
