Viura replacing Malvasia in Spain, this variety produces the "modern," early maturing white wines of Rioja. Wines tend to be fairly light, relatively high in acidity almost floral in youth, and yet loses its freshness fairly early.

Rioja is mainly identified with the production of red wine, however in this region is also produced white wine with Garnacha Blanca and Viura grapes, the latter known in other areas of Spain as Macabeo.
Whites are primarily made from Viura. The region is proud of its heritage, which dates back to the 19th century when groups of wine makers from the Bordeaux region of France settled here, trying to escape phylloxera.
There were heavy frosts at the end of November which affected some of the vines, causing an irregular budding the following spring: Viura was worst hit, with some damage to Tempranillo and less to Garnacha vines.
That shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, as Sauvignon is planted in the DO Rueda region and is part of this wine's blend (it also contains Spain's own Verdejo and Viura).
