A well-balanced wine is a wine with various components that exist in complete harmony. In these wines, no quality has been over pronounced or deficient in the aroma, flavour or aftertaste. But a well balanced wine is not necessarily a great wine.

Balance
A well-balanced wine is a primary goal of the wine maker. Such a wine blends all of its components gracefully: the fruit, tannin, acid, and sugar. A wine's balance may only be realized after some aging.

Delicate
A well-balanced light wine, with a pleasant but unassertive smell and taste. Complex, with many flavors working together, but not overbearing. The term is also used to describe the fragile quality of a good wine on the verge of decline.

WHEN TO DRINK: This well-balanced, quality Cabernet is good now, although its perceptible tannins call for either red meat or breathing time. It should cellar well, though, for five years on the wine rack and 10 or more in a quality cellar.

At a restaurant two weeks ago, we had a 1991 Gewürztraminer from Alsace (Domaine Zind Humbrecht "Clos Windsbuhl" Hunawihr) that was so effortlessly rich, well-balanced and satisfying that at one point we called it "the essence of wine.

TOURBAT: Variety of disputed origin currently mainly grown in Sardinia where it has the alias name Torbato. Also known elsewhere as Caninu. Regarded as capable of producing a fragrant, crisp, well-balanced white varietal wine.
