Welschriesling (velsh-reece'-ling)
A white wine grape that is not related to, but is trying to capitalize on the name of Riesling. It is planted throughout Europe, especially in and near Austria.

Welschriesling
[Italianski]
Welsch in most of the countries where this is grown means foreign - clearly stating that this is not real Riesling. Soft white wines are often pleasantly nutty, but never more than that.

WELSCHRIESLING
See Italian Riesling.
Woody
Having excessive aromas of wood, due to over-aging in casks or barrels.

Welschriesling
Origin: The origin is not explicit. Despite the name, it is not related to Rhine Riesling grapes. In Moravia, it was planted about 1900 first, now it covers 10,4 % of the entire vineyard area with the trend to reduction.

Welschriesling (white)
The 'poor man's Riesling', Welschriesling is actually not related to the superior Rhine Riesling of Germany at all. It is at its best in Austria, where it can make sumptuously sweet dessert whites.

WELSCHRIESLING: (See also Italian Riesling above). Austrian name for the grape of ancient, but unknown, origins. May have Eurasian antecedents. Has no relationship to the german Riesling grape, which is called the Riesling Renano in Italy.

The grapes mainly used for the production of these wines include Welschriesling, Weissburgunder, Neuberger, Chardonnay, Traminer and Furmint, the grape used for the production of Tokaji Aszú.

Also known as the Welschriesling in Austria, Laski Rizling in Slovenia and Grasevina in Croatia, (i.e: former Yugoslavia), and Olasz Rizling in Hungary. V.

The wine has many imposters, including Clare Riesling, Welschriesling, and Laski Riesling, grapes with no ancestral claim to the noble grape Riesling. It does have a few legitimate aliases, though, including Rhine, White, and Johannisberg Riesling.

This green grape is a crossing of Welschriesling x Furmint. Made by Giovanni Dalmasso. The grape is only grown experimentally.
