Also known as, Cirfandli, Spatrot, Roter Zierfandler.

 


ZIERFANDLER: Also known as the Spätrot grape. (See above). Contrary to some reports there is no evidence that this grape has a clonal relationship to the Zinfandel grape of California.
ZILAVKA: White-wine grape grwn in Bosnia around Mostar.

SPÄTROT: (a.k.a Zierfandler or Zirifahnler grapevines). White-wine producing variety widely grown in Austria and often blended with the Rotgipfler grape derived wine to make the popular "Gumpoldskirchen" village wines.

New evidence from DNA profiling possibly indicates a parentage of Gouais Blanc and an unknown variety (possibly Blauer Zierfandler). Used to produce dry, fruity red wines. Has many synonym names including Blue Frank (or French) in N. America (N.

by William Robert Prince in A Treatise on the Vine (1830) may have referred to one of Gibbs' 1829 acquisitions. Webster suggests that the name is a corruption of tzinifándli (czirifandli), a Hungarian word derived from the German Zierfandler, ...

The origin of the grapename "Zinfandel" in California is currently not known but is thought by some to be a corruption of Zierfandler, a completely unrelated white variety still grown in the Balkan region of Europe.
