Annamaya kosha
The physical body. The same as Sthula Sharira or the physical body. It is the first \"sheath\" of the five sheaths accepted by the Vedantins, a sheath being the same as that which is called \"principle\" in Theosophy.

 


Annamaya kosha is the material part of creation, regardless of whether it is a stone, a plant or a human being, which all exist in different degrees of consciousness.

Annamaya Kosha is the physical body (Sthula Sarira). Pranamaya Kosha, Manomaya Kosha and Vijnanamaya Kosha are in the astral body (Sukshma Sarira). Anandamaya Kosha belongs to the causal body (Karana Sarira).

1) Annamaya kosha which is translated as food sheath and corresponds roughly to the physical body. It has the most dense and slow vibrational frequency. It is associated with the sthula sharira (coarse body).

In the beginning of yoga practice, the primary focus is on Annamaya Kosha, the alignment and physical sensations of the physical body.

According to "Taittiriyopanishad", Pancha Koshas are the five sheaths, which cover the overall human system. These are the Annamaya kosha (Food Sheath), Pranamaya kosha (Pranic Sheath), Manomaya kosha (Mental Sheath), ...

annamaya kosha: gross body, physical sheath
antahkarana: inner instrument or organ; the fourfold mind: mind, intellect, ego and subconscious mind
arati: waving of light before the Lord
artha: an object of desire, wealth
asana: posture, seat ...

arises in the Manomaya Kosha (mind sheath); this disturbs the energy balance in the Pranamaya kosha (energy sheath). This disturbance percolates down and causes subsequent malfunction in the organs, nerves and bodily systems - the Annamaya Kosha.
