ARDHA MATSYENDRASANA
BENEFITS
This Asana increases appetite by increasing the digestive fire. It destroys terrible diseases. It rouses Kundalini and makes the moon-flow, Chandranadi, steady.

Ardha Matsyendrasana
Paschimottanasana and Halasana bend the spine forwards. Dhanur, Bhujanga and Salabha Asanas are counter-poses to bend the spine backwards. This is not sufficient.

Spinal Twist / Ardha Matsyendrasana
Note: It is beneficial to do twists after back bends (13-17), as they relieve lower back tension. This illustration depicts a more advanced version of spinal twist.

Meru wakrasana and ardha matsyendrasana are important twisting practices which keep the whole spine supple without straining ligaments.

Half Spinal Twist (Ardha Matsyendrasana)
If done properly, the Half Spinal Twist lengthens and strengthens the spine. It is also beneficial for your liver, kidneys, as well as adrenal glands.

SIMPLE SPINAL TWIST (ARDHA MATSYENDRASANA)
Sit on the floor. Place your right sole against your left thigh.
Cross your left foot over the right knee and place the sole of your foot firmly on the floor.
Position your left hand before you.

This Asana in its original form is difficult to practice, therefore, it was simplified which is called 'Ardha Matsyendrasana'. After sufficient practice of this Asana, it becomes possible to practice Matsyendrasana.

(v) backward bending: Bhujangasana, tiryaka Bhujangasana, sphinx, shalabhasana, sarpasana;
(vi) forward bending: paschimottanasana, Pada hastasana;
(vii) spinal twists: trikonasana, meru wakrasana, bhunamanasana and ardha matsyendrasana.
