Importance Of Asanas
Four Asanas are prescribed for the purpose of Japa and meditation. They are Padmasana, Siddhasana, Svastikasana and Sukhasana.

 


Asanas and Stress
Asanas greatly influence the functioning of the endocrine system. We know the important role the endocrine glands play during stress adaptation, by secreting the stress hormones.

Asanas -
Asanas are beneficial in treatment of diabetes. Important aspect of Asanas is stability and comfort experienced in the position. After attaining the position, one needs to relax all the muscles and try to maintain the positions for long.

Yoga Asanas
Asana is one of the eight limbs of Yoga. "Asana" means staying or abiding. It is through asanas that an individual achieves the unity of body and mind. In the west, asana is commonly called "posture" or "pose".

DHANAURASANA - The Bow
This third chakra posture, the Bow, focuses on the belly. The posture helps to massage the abdominals and the solar plexus and stimulates digestion.


Yoga Asanas (Yoga Postures)

At Health & Yoga, we are involved in an initiative to bring you the most comprehensive range of Yoga Postures.

'Asanas' in Sanskrit means posture. There are around 84 asanas - each one has a special name, special form and a distinct way of performing. Asanas are designed to promote, a state of mental and physical well-being or good health.

The asanas and the following neck exercises improve the flexibility of your neck.

Some asanas mimic the shape of animals, while others honor the memory of great beings, saints or gods. When we assume these shapes, we not only consider the mechanics of the asana, we take on the energy and spirit of those beings.

A Few Asanas
Lotus (Padmasana)
In my hierarchy of poses I consider Padmasana, Lotus Pose, the most important. Shavasana.

In some asanas, the thighs have a natural tendency to roll outward by virtue of the position they are in.   In these asanas, a deliberate effort is needed to keep the thighs centered by rolling them inward.

THE PRACTICE OF ASANAS
Perhaps you will be surprised to learn that not all the modern day asanas are mentioned in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and the Gerandha Samhita.

A few thoughts about asanas are important to keep in mind. This is not about accomplishment. Since we are all different in our bodies, minds and spirits, so too will we be different in an asana (yoga position).

Conditioning is an important ingredient in yoga. It is the "withdrawal of oneself from the outside world and the achievement of emotional calm".

The physical discipline of Yoga involves specific breathing techniques and postures, called asanas - a Sanskrit term, which means "to sit in a particular position." In other words, asanas are the various positions that make up the practice of Yoga.

ASANAS
The asanas are the physical forces behind the yogic balance of the body, mind and spirit. They are slowly assumed postures or poses held from 10 seconds to several minutes. Asanas differ in two ways from the western gymnastics.

Common Asanas for maintaining Health and Fitness
Tadasana
Standing erect and with weight evenly on both feet; straightens spine.

Asanas such as Halasana, Sarvangasana, Sirshasana and Padmasana should be avoided, as these should only be attempted by experts. These asanas can place a lot of strain on your joints and discs. In time, this could lead to very serious lesions.

Asanas are designed to improve Health and bring energy to the body and mind which is necessary in opening the Nadis. It can also serve as a Meditation pose which can make you feel perfectly comfortable for a longer period of time.

Asanas is very powerful and if it is done the right way the effect can becomes dramatic. When doing yoga the ones mind must be in harmony with the body’s movements.

Asanas and Pranayama remove all sorts of diseases, improve health, energise digestion, invigorate the nerves, straighten the Sushumna Nadi, remove Rajas and awaken Kundalini. Practice of Asanas and Pranayama bestows good health and steady mind.

Yoga Asanas have a spiritual connotation. Interpreted merely as another system of physical exercise, the Yoga Asanas may not appear to have any connection with spirituality.

Yoga asanas can be practiced by young and old alike. While there is no one who should be excluded, you should check with your doctor before you begin a course if you suffer from a medical condition or have any doubts.

Some asanas can help create this motion through directed actions of the femur in the hip socket (acetabulum) while directing these torques through the innominate bones (os coxae).

These yoga asanas/positions really help after riding. Triangle and pigeon pose relieves most of my tightness as well as downward facing dog. I will need to add child's pose to my after ride routine. Thanks for a great article specific to cyclists.

Never perform asanas on bare ground. Always spread a blanket or a mat.
If possible, take a full bath or half bath before you perform asanas.
Keep complete control on breathing. Always breathe through the nose.

In Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga, postures (asanas) are arranged in sequences, called series. There are six such series, although most practionners only study the first one, Yoga Chikitsa, which is generally called the primary series.

I was startled to see the symbolism of the asanas revealed in this experience. My initial position was firm and strong, like the Mountain. "I will stay in and write today.
