Atma - the basis of vedic traditions
The uniqueness of the vedic tradition is that the subject of its scrutiny was not matter but spirit. Even when matter was analyzed it was seen as an evolute of spirit and not as an independent entity in itself.
atma (eva) abhut sarvani bhutani (sarvabhutani) the Self-existent has become all (these) becomings. [cf. Isa 7]

Atma or Atman means conscious-ness, spirit, soul, self, the source of life and the cosmic power behind the body-mind complex.
In Hinduism, atma-jnana (self-realization) is the key to obtaining moksha.

Imani bhutani, idam sarvam yad ayam atma. All the created beings, all the worlds, ima lokah - all - sarvam yad ayam atma. Can I place myself in the location of something which is the extended world outside? Is the world outside my self?
