Atman

Yoga Atma-jnanaAum

Paramatman is beyond knowledge and ignorance, devoid of all material attributes (upadhi). In Chapter 13 of the Bhagavad Gita, Paramatman is described as Vishnu residing in the hearts of all beings and in every atom of matter.

Atman
1. The divine element in man; the real Self of everyone.
2. Pure Consciousness, the pure Self, the unchanging, eternal Truth that is beyond the entire manifest world.

Atman - The Self or Soul; denotes both the Supreme Soul and the individual soul, which, according to Non-dualistic Vedanta are ultimately identical.

The Atman, being the presupposition of all acts of understanding, feeling and willing, is not known to any individualised knower, and so it appears as a mystery, a Wonder of wonders, awe-inspiring.

27. Atman is of the dimensions of a thumb. It is a light without smoke. It is without form. It is shining within the body. It is undifferentiable and immortal.

Atma or Atman means conscious-ness, spirit, soul, self, the source of life and the cosmic power behind the body-mind complex.

101. The Atman that is absolute existence and knowledge cannot be realized without constant practice. So one seeking after knowledge should long meditate upon Brahman for the attainment of the desired goal.

As, according to Vedanta, the latter proposition is affirmed, Yoga is that process by which the identity of the two (Jivatman and Paramatman)"which identity ever exists, in fact"is realised by the Yogin or practitioner of Yoga.

All forces, all powers and Prana spring from the fountain or common source, 'Atman'. All physical forces, all mental forces come under the category 'Prana'. It is force on every plane of being, from the highest to the lowest.

The first and most important is the realization that the ultimate, formless, and inconceivable Brahman (Godhead) is the same as Atman, as our internal soul.

ANTARATMAN: Inner Self.
ANTARYAMIN: Inner witness.
ANUBHAVA: Experience.
APTA: Realized.
ARHATA: A perfected Soul.
ASAMPRAJNATA: Highest superconscious state where the mind is completely annihilated and Reality experienced.

You must utilize this to the best advantage by deep meditation on the Atman or inner Self. Self-realization should be your goal.

This identity is known as the Soul, which in some ancient texts or philosophical systems is called Atman or Purusha.

The term dharma can best be explained as the "law of being" without which things cannot exist, just as the essential factor in human being is life - the atman without which he cannot exist. Therefore the dharma of human being is atman.

Meditation is the unceasing flow of one thought about God or the Atman. It is completely shutting out worldly thoughts and thinking only about God. Swami Sivananda often likens it to the continuous flow of oil from one vessel to another.

The 'Self' or 'Atman' (Soul) is the owner of human beings and hence the owner of the mind as well. If one recognizes the 'Self' in its true nature, he will be able to control and order the mind.

Yastu sarvani bhutani atmanyevanupasyati; Sarvabhutesu catmanam tato na vijugupsate.
Love flows to that object which recognizes it as related to Self. If the whole Universe and is seen as Self, Love never perishes.

All of us have our own ways of finding this peace, our own Meditative habits - from the old lady who sits knitting by the fire to the boatman whiling away a summer's afternoon by the river, oblivious of the passing of time.

The senses are higher than the body, the mind is higher than the senses; above the mind is the intellect, and above the intellect is the Atman (soul). Thus knowing that which is supreme, let the Atman rule the ego.

Viparyaya: Wrong knowledge; wrong cognition.

8. For this exercise also one has to sit with stretched legs. Close the two fists of the hands. Now imitate rowing a boat like a boatman rowing a boat by bending forward right upto the legs. Repeat this exercise 8 to 10 times.

and impotent when faced with the difficulties of life. YOGA induces the power and energy to handle these challenges in life. Moreover, YOGA enables us to overcome the human condition and to reveal our divine nature, the Divine Self within ( Jivatman).
