Mahavatar Babaji is the name given to an Indian saint by Lahiri Mahasaya and several of his disciples[1] who met Mahavatar Babaji between 1861 and 1935.

Whether an Avatara is a descent of God to man or man's ascent to God, is immaterial for us. Literally, Avatara means descent or manifestation. When the need for the higher values of life is felt more, the Avatara becomes a helpful stepping stone.

One example is the avatara Lord Rama. Lord Rama represents the descent of God into the perfect man.

The story of the moon is emphasised in the history of all the ten avatars but not in the case of Buddha or other great personalities. Out of the ten incarnations, dasavatar, Rama is supreme - he asked for the moon.

Too, there are other classes of descended masters; the East Indians spoke of them as siddhas, isvarakotis, avatarans, or other already enlightened beings who seem to come to earth as if born for the purpose of being Sat Guru to many.

He is regarded as an Avatara of Lord Krishna. When he was a boy he simply touched a buffalo. It repeated the Vedas. He had full control over the elements. When there was no vessel to prepare food, his sister prepared bread on his back.

He is worshiped by Vaishnavas as the eighth avatara, or incarnation, of Vishnu. He is best known as the Supreme Personage depicted in the Mahabharata, and specifically in the Bhagavad Gita. For Gaudiya Vaishnavism, Krishna is the Godhead.

He was accepted by Maha Avatar Babaji as his student, after being declared a master of Shakti and Naad Yoga systems by Gurudeep. His Vedic teacher (Vedacharya) is Pandit Vamadeva Shastri (David Frawley).

In the modern times, toward the middle of the ninteenth century, Mahavatar Babaji brought the technique of Kriya Yoga to the general public through his discipline Shri Shyamacharan Lahiri, a pious householder (Lahiri Mahasaya).
