Bhujangasana is one of the most important Yoga poses. Bhujangasana is also called by the name of Cobra pose. Bhujangasana helps in stretching the spine, strengthening the back and arms. It also opens the chest and heart.

Feet hips-width apart (or wider if too intense on back)

In Bhujangasana or Cobra Yoga Pose, the head and trunk arch gracefully up, like a Cobra with its hood raised.

Cobra (Bhujangasana)

This is a basic yoga posture. It is very easy to do especially if your back is not too stiff and rigid.

Bhujangasana (Fig 23)
Lie prone with belly touching the ground. Keep the forehead on the ground. Keep both the hands on the two sides of the chest and along the ground.

From a belly down position, place your hands palms down beneath your shoulders with your elbows close to your sides.

Bhujangasana: The cobra posture.
Bikram Yoga: A rigorous form of Yoga performed in a room heated to at least 95 degrees. Each posture in the sequence is designed to safely stretch and open the body, in preparation for the next posture.

Bhujangasana (Cobra posture)
On the inhalation, lower the hips while pushing the chest forward and upward with the hands, until the spine is fully arched and the head is facing up. The knees and lower abdomen remain above the floor.

COBRA (BHUJANGASANA)
Lie face down with arms at sides and head resting on either side.
Slowly bring your head to center and rest your forehead on the floor.
Place your hands underneath your shoulders with your fingertips facing inward.

Ardha-Bhujangasana
In a kneeling position, move forward the right foot until the lower leg-having tibia and fibula bones-is perpendicular to the ground. Keep the back straight, arms by the sides, and inhale.

bhujangasana (the cobra): choice
When we recognize our patterns in practice, we start to become alert to how these underlying dynamics play out in other areas. In the knowing comes the power of choice. Do I want to stay this way?

Bhujangasana, Salabhasana and Dhanurasana increase the peristaltic movement of the bowels, remove constipation and cure the diseases of the abdomen.

The Cobra - Bhujangasana Stretches the spine, strengthens the back and arms, opens the chest and heart. Lie down on your stomach. Keep your legs together, arms at your side, close to your body, with your hands by your chest.

Note: There are many variations to cobra pose. You can experiment to discover the one(s) that work best for you. Lie on your belly and rest your head on your folded arms. Take a few breaths.

Urdhva Mukha Svanasana is done more commonly than Bhujangasana (Cobra) in the Iyengar school of yoga.   It is a more active asana than Bhujangasana.

As in the example above in cobra (bhujangasana) keeping both the pubic bone and the sacrum long from the head toward the feet, while the feet remain in traction out and away from the hip socket.
