Chitta And The Control Of Prana
1. Chitta is the Subconscious mind. It is the mind-stuff. It is the store-house of memory. Samskaras or impressions of actions are imbedded here. It is one of the four parts of Antahkarana or inner instruments, viz.

Mind. The word chitta is a general term used for mind, which includes manas (lower mind), ahamkara (ego), and buddhi (intellect).

Chittam comes from chiti which mean consciousness. Chittam is the seat of consciousness.
The Mind has the power of identity, we are what we think. If we focus our mind on sour thoughts, we are sour.

Chitta is individual and cosmic consciousness. Individual consciousness, whereby the Self (atman) knows that it exists because it is aware of itself, and cosmic consciousness, of objects held in the mind.

Chitta - Consciousness.

Chitta is the mental substance. It takes various forms. These forms constitute Vrittis. It gets transformed (Parinama). These transformations or modifications are the thought-waves, whirlpools or Vrittis.

Chitta also has its own intelligence, feelings and rationality. It is not only the state of observation or knowing or retaining impressions. Chitta is a complete unit.

Chitta could to understood as combination of mind, intellect and ego.it is the false principal of identity we assosiate ourselfs with. chitta acquires the form of ever thing it is assosiated with due to sensual contact.

Classical Definitions: __ YUJYATE ANENA ITI YOGAH ( Dictionary meaning) that which unites in yoga __ YOGAH CHITTA-VRTTI-NIRODHAH ( Patanjali) yoga is the cessation of vrttis(modifications) of mind.

Surrender to the luminous core of one's consciousness, which is more powerful than one's strongest proclivities, initiates a mighty countervailing force against the cumulative momentum generated by the chittavrittis.

In Sanskrit these four functions are designated as Manas, Buddhi, Ahamkara and Chitta. Manas is ordinary, indeterminate thinking - just being aware that something is there. Manas is the work of the mind.

It is described that human consciousness is folded into five layers, or sheaths, (koshas) around the central point, containing the self (chitta). The self is enveloped in the sheath of bliss.

Although we go on spinning concepts to distinguish one from the other, these words -jiva, chitta, prana- are all identical in their meaning.

Within yoga we actually see a similar teaching "Yogas Chitta Vritti Nirodha" Yoga Sutras of Patanjali B.1 s.2, Yoga is restraint of thought in the field of the mind. Here is an apparent paradox and basis for the misunderstanding.

When one's Chitta enters the Sushumna along with Prana, it reaches the high seat in the head, along with Prana.

Styan means the laziness of the chitta, or the drowsiness of the mind. The mind does not believe in karma or action and then there is a tendency not to do anything. Due to this, the studies of yoga are stopped or not undertaken.

" Breath control, which quiets the chitta and balances ida and pingala. Science of controlling prana through breathing techniques in which lengths of inhalation, retention and exhalation are modulated. Pranayama prepares the mind for deep meditation.

'Yogaschitta vrittinirodhah.' This is the highest aspect of Yoga as mind is fickle. 'Oh Ram; Mind roams about in all directions. How it can be fixed in one place? So far as this mind remains fickle, restless, disturbed, Jiva will not be at ease.

118. The restraint of all modifications of the mind by regarding all mental states like the Chitta as Brahman alone, is called Pranayama.

CHELA: Disciple.
CHIRANJIVI: One who has gained eternal life.
CHITTA: Subconscious mind.

Artha: Meaning; purpose; objects.
