"Yogaschitta vritti nirodhah"
This yoga means withdrawing the extrovert tendencies of mind from mundane objects, making them introvert and merging them with the basic background of mind.

Yoga is the cessation (nirodha) of the modes of mind (chitta vritti).
Then consciousness takes on its true nature.
At other times consciousness is identified with the modes of mind.

Nirodah - Restriction
Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind.

All such activities lead to achieving perfect mental equilibrium to control the senses. When one is accomplished in the practice of meditation, he ceases all disturbing mental activities (chitta vritti nirodha).

The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit verb "Yuj" (to unite) which refers to merging of individual Consciousness with universal Consciousness. Patanjali defines yoga as 'mastery over the modifications of mind-Chitta vritti nirodhah'. Read More...
