Cobra Pose --- Bhujaungasana
Lie down on your chest. Slide your hands, palms down to either side of your shoulders. Tuck the elbows to your sides and keep your feet together.

COBRA (BHUJANGASANA)
Lie face down with arms at sides and head resting on either side.
Slowly bring your head to center and rest your forehead on the floor.
Place your hands underneath your shoulders with your fingertips facing inward.

Cobra Posture
Bhujanga means Cobra. Bhujanga Asana is always practiced as the first in a series of backward bending movements. In this asana the spine is arched backward gently promoting flexibility.

The Cobra
Step 1 - Face Down
Lie on your front. When you are fully relaxed, begin to come into the cobra. Still lying on your front, place your hands flat on the floor so that they are directly underneath your shoulders.

Cobra (Bhujangasana)

This is a basic yoga posture. It is very easy to do especially if your back is not too stiff and rigid.

The Cobra Pose (Naga-asana) Instruction:

Bhujangasana is also called by the name of Cobra pose. Bhujangasana helps in stretching the spine, strengthening the back and arms. It also opens the chest and heart. Start the Asana or the Cobra pose by lying down on your stomach.

The Cobra - Bhujangasana Stretches the spine, strengthens the back and arms, opens the chest and heart. Lie down on your stomach. Keep your legs together, arms at your side, close to your body, with your hands by your chest.

Cobra Pose helps to open the chest and lower back. It is good to combine this pose with the ones above so that there are not too many forward bends.

Note: There are many variations to cobra pose. You can experiment to discover the one(s) that work best for you. Lie on your belly and rest your head on your folded arms. Take a few breaths.

For example, you find a forward bending pose, paschimottanasana, salabhasana (the 'locust pose'), and bhuiangasana (the 'cobra pose'), both backward bending poses.

Urdhva Mukha Svanasana is done more commonly than Bhujangasana (Cobra) in the Iyengar school of yoga.   It is a more active asana than Bhujangasana.

Other excellent solar plexus extension poses for pitta is Bhujangasana (the cobra) and Dhanurasana (bow pose described above.) These asanas can play a role in the treatment of ulcers and hepatitis.

Cobra yoga pose -Lay flat on the stomach, with palms down on the ground underneath or slightly wider than the shoulders. Elbows should be pointing back and out-the body should be relaxed.

Going into a backbend such as Cobra, for example, you begin on an in-breath. Hold the pose and breathe rhythmically. An exception to this rule: Upward movements of the legs work best on the exhalation since the legs are much heavier than the arms.
