Dandasana is the foundation of all seated asanas -- forward bends and twists.   As with all seated poses, Dandasana can be made easier by placing height in the form of folded blankets under your buttocks.

Dandasana is the basic seated pose from which all the others originate. Think of it as a seated version of Mountain Pose or Tadasana.
Instructions:
1. Sit with the legs outstretched straight in front.

Dandayamana-Dhanurasana: Standing bow pulling posture, This posture frims the abdominal wall and upper thighs, and tightens upper arms, hips and buttocks.
Darshama: A visit to a great person, viewpoint or vision.

Dandasana is the “Samasthiti” of the seated poses, most of our seated poses start from this position. Dandasana helps prepare the back for the forward bending postures to come.

In Dandasana your body should form a right angle so that a straight line perpendicular with the floor should be able to be drawn from the center of the ears through the outer shoulder and the outer hips.

Danda dhauti: This is the method of cleaning the oesophagus, the food pipe, from the throat to the stomach, by inserting a specially prepared stick.

6. Knees should be kept touching the ground. Chest also should touch the ground. Lower part of the belly as well as the buttocks be kept a little raised above the ground. Forehead should touch the ground. Now exhale.

The Merudanda is the vertebral column. Western anatomy divides it into five regions; and it is to be noted in corroboration of the theory here expounded that these correspond with the regions in which the five Chakras are situated.

In fact, serious practitioners use a 't' shaped stick called a yoga danda which keeps the elbows stationary. By putting pressure on the arm pit, the yoga-danda is also supposed to change the flow of energy in the nadis.

On an inhalation, roll onto the tops of the feet (this allows the hips to come closer towards the hands.)
The only part of the body touching the floor at this point is your knees and hands.

In the latter case, the Puranas say that a danda called the Yama-danda is kept on the head of such a person so that he may remember his past life. It is described as a burning iron rod. At once, he remembers all his past life on earth.

Urdhva Dandasana (upward facing staff pose). This could be considered an intermediate stage of sirsasana, but as you will see if you work in this pose, it is a great pose for developing core strength and balance.

At the time when Rama, his wife Sita, and his brother Laksmana were in exile as hermits in the Dandaka forest, Ravana, the demon king of Lanka (Ceylon), came to their hermitage in the disguise of a monk and captured Sita, taking her to Lanka.

Uddiyana bandha is also key to many asana practices. For example, in plank pose (lifted chaturanga dandasana or push up pose) lift from the abdomen upward while preventing the back from rounding.

Those who sit in this Asana have a quite steady and firm pose. They cannot be easily shaken. The knees are rendered very hard. Merudanda becomes firm and strong. This Asana resembles more or less the Namaz pose in which the Muslims sit for prayer.

The pictured show the spine known as yogadanda, which symbolizes the staff of God, followed up by the kundalini which is the serpent power coiled at the based of the spine. Lastly, symbol of the sun and moon are also used for the major nadis.

When the vibration is set up, Prana moves and acts upon Akasa, and brings forth the various forms. The macrocosm (Brahmanda) and microcosm (Pindanda) are combinations of Prana (energy) and Akasa (matter).

From there, you get to deep- stretching poses like pigeon, twisting pigeon (I want to marry this pose I love it so much), child's pose and dandasana (seated stick pose). Then you end like you began, with a seated meditation. Ahhh...
