In Sanskrit adho means downward, mukha means face, and svana means dog. Adho Mukha Svanasana is one of the poses in the traditional Sun Salutation sequence. It's also an excellent yoga asana all on its own.

Adho Mukha Shvanasana
From the Table position, curl your toes under and spread your fingers wide apart. Move hands forward about six inches.

Begin by kneeling on all fours with your hands directly under your shoulders and your knees directly under your hips, your fingers pointing straight ahead. Inhale and lift your hips up until you're standing on your toes.

From downward dog (12), keeping your elbows straight, slowly lower your hips and pelvis towards the floor. Keep the shoulders away from the ears. The only thing touching the floor will be your hands and feet. You can shift to the tops of your feet.

From Downward Dog, step or hop forward into Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend), and inhale as you come up to Tadasana (Mountain Pose). From there stand sideways on your mat in a wide stance with your feet parallel.

Engage your arm strength with the Downward Dog.
Place your mat near a wall, with a folded blanket for your head and arms. Kneel and create a triangle with your forearms on the floor.

Cole's sequence of postures begins with Adho Mukha Svanasana (downward dog), Uttanasana with head support (standing forward bend), short Adho Mukha Vrksasana (handstand) as preparation for Salamba Sirsasana (headstand).

- Bring the body into downward dog with the fingertips two inches from a wall. Decide which leg is the 'pusher' leg and which is the 'swinger.'
- Look to the thumbs for courage, and to bring strength into the torso.

Cobra to Downward Dog.
Go to a push up position but put your hands closer to your legs, so that your hips raise. Keep your legs straight and try to keep your heels on the floor (calf stretch).
